A Journey Toward Authenticity, Equity, and Understanding

In October 2024 we held another meaningful Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) workshop at the Browne Center, dedicated to exploring ways to support each other in representing our authentic selves. The day included activities that strengthened our skills in perspective-taking, self-advocacy, and pride in our diverse backgrounds, all while deepening our commitment to the One World mission of “building understanding both literally and figuratively between the peoples of the world, both locally and globally.”

We began on solid ground with a perspective-taking and problem-solving exercise. In a block-building challenge, each of us held a unique view of what the final structure should look like—but no one had a complete picture. Through listening, open communication, and carefully sharing clues, we combined each individual’s viewpoint to create a cohesive structure. This activity demonstrated the power of every voice and the importance of tackling challenges from multiple perspectives.

Next, we moved to an exercise on a balancing cable that spanned from tree to tree. This required us to support each other physically as we shared our personal reflections on “What we are proud of about ourselves,” “What we wish people would know about us,” and “What we hope will never be forgotten” about our cultural and heritage backgrounds. As we helped one another balance on the cable, we were reminded of the importance of being both vulnerable and supportive. The reflections shared here brought out the deep pride, values, and hopes rooted in each person’s story, inspiring us to carry forward these connections.

Finally, we ascended into the trees for the “flying squirrel” activity, where we practiced self-advocacy in a high-stakes environment. As we were hoisted into the air, it became clear how essential it is to use our voice to express our needs, especially in vulnerable situations. This activity underscored that advocating for oneself takes courage, trust, and the willingness to communicate openly, qualities that resonate in personal and professional life alike.

Throughout the day, we celebrated the diverse backgrounds within our group, including Mexican, Puerto Rican, German, Lebanese, Indian, Cherokee, Chinese, Canadian, American, and Zapotec heritages. Sharing these unique histories and stories enriched our understanding of each other and strengthened our dedication to DEIJ values.

By the end of the day, we left with a renewed commitment to the DEIJ principles that One World Language School embodies. These experiences built both literal and metaphorical bridges, helping us carry forward the mission of global understanding. Thank you to the Joan Dwyer and Jayne Dwyer Charitable Fund who brought this workshop to One World and helped us to create a space where authenticity and understanding can flourish. Let’s continue upholding these values, fostering inclusivity, and honoring the unique perspectives we bring to our communities.
